Small Kindnesses — by Danusha Laméris

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk
down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs
to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you”
when someone sneezes, a leftover
from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.

And sometimes, when you spill lemons
from your grocery bag, someone else will help you
pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other.

We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot,
and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile
at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress
to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder,
and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.

We have so little of each other, now. So far
from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these
fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here,
have my seat,” “Go ahead — you first,” “I like your hat.”

When I was a young ,inexperienced brand new mother who was far away from family and just learning to find my feet, there was a woman cashier at the grocery store who always called me "love". It always helped to ground me and feel like I could do this no matter how rough was the night or morning. It helped to generate a feeling of belonging and a sense I could get through anything. Just one sweet word, spoken with kindness all those years ago, and yet, I have never forgotten it or this woman who probably never had any idea the difference she made in my life.

It is good to remember her now in gratitude and ask for blessings for her... Just a little example as to how it doesn't have to be momentous, this kindness, to change someone's day or even life. :happy

Thanks soooo much, Welles. :sunflower:

This has been the theme in my prayers lately. Lately, I am beginning to notice the level of appreciation I have in my prayers, and pray that I may be kind to those within my environment. I am starting to hear myself more as I pray to God. As exciting as the mystery and miracles are, I feel that kindness is one of the greatest blessings.

You, a reflection of the Fathers Will, sharing this poem- as it just happens to align with my recent innermost dialogue is confirmation to me from Spirit/God that indeed this is what truly matters.

It's something to see the 1111 promptings turn from numbers, to actual moments with people- All that is. Now. God, Reflecting- Speaking... Guiding...

Cheers~
