Praying With The News — by Rabbi Yael Levy
I thought this little essay was amazing. I'd never had this thought before. Here's the essence of it... Many years ago I was taught the practice of praying with the news. I have shared it over the years and always find myself returning to it during this season. In this practice, each time we read o...

Your True Beauty — by Jennifer Farley
Another bried reminder that heartened me today... Your True Beauty — by Jennifer Farley Your beauty does not exist in the exterior shell that is your body. It does not exist in the things you do for others; it certainly does not exist in how others perceive you. Your true beauty lies in how you sho...

This is an article that describes Joy's reason and process for writing her poem, Instructions for Traveling West. I loved the article and the poem.

Hermann Hesse on Breaking the Trance of Busyness — by Maria Popova
I would simply like to reclaim an old and, alas, quite unfashionable private formula: Moderate enjoyment is double enjoyment. And: Do not overlook the little joys! - Hermann Hesse - This article contemplates busyness from primarily the perspective of Herman Hesse but references to other notable thi...

4 Reasons to Cultivate Patience — by Kira M. Newman
Here is the introduction to the 4 reasons... As virtues go, patience is a quiet one. It’s often exhibited behind closed doors, not on a public stage: A father telling a third bedtime story to his son, a dancer waiting for her injury to heal. In public, it’s the impatient ones who grab all our atten...

Joyas Voladoras — by Brian Doyle
Since this short essay by Brian Doyle was published in the Scholar 15 years ago, it has been read hundreds of thousands of times on our website and often borrowed for classroom use. It is the lead piece in a just-published collection of Brian’s essays called One Long River of Sound: Notes on Wonder...

Poetry is an Egg with a Horse Inside — by Matthea Harvey
While there is quite a bit of poetry in this somewhat lengthy article it is more about poetry for both children and adults. I thought it was brilliant. Here are the introductory thoughts... Our concerns as adults and as children are not so different. We want to be surprised, transformed, challenged...

Re: Judgement
On truth and hurt. I share Geoff's basic principle that it is ideal to not cause other people emotional distress as well as possible. However I occasionally suffer from Truth Tourette Syndrome. That is when an emotional reaction builds up in me until I can't stand the pressure and I blurt out my po...

Love is unchanging and unchangeable. — by John Smallman
I loved this little essay. Here's the first paragraph. As the human collective moves ever closer to the moment of its magnificent awakening, there are still some loose ends to be attended to because the egoic need to be right is still preventing some major players from allowing themselves to look w...

Thank you, Geoff. I struggle with judgement reasonably often. My solution is (to the best of my ability) reside in the Heart and become a possible source of Love. I do experience that it works but is is an ongoing process. Your thoughts help.

Forgiveness — by Wayne Dyer
This brief little essay is a great reminder... Forgiveness is the most powerful thing that you can do for your physiology and your spirituality, and it remains one of the least attractive things to us, largely because our egos rule so unequivocally. To forgive is somehow associated with saying that...

On the Subversive Power of Gossip — by Maria Tatar
I thought this was a brilliant take on a subject that is often disparaged. Here's the first paragraph... Chatter, chitchat, gossip, idle talk, and conversation have always done deep cultural work for us, and today they continue to serve as sources of knowledge, helping us make sense of the world, p...

The Simplest Meditation: Waiting — by Peter Russell
For most of us waiting is not easy, often a bore. Waiting for a bus or train, we look for something to do to pass the time. Sitting in a doctor’s waiting room, we idle away the minutes thumbing through magazines of no particular interest. We want the waiting to be over with, so that we can get on w...

Adventures of the Spirit — by Christopher Titmuss
The heart of this little article is a quote from Christopher Titmuss... "We must remember we are exhaustible. We need renewal. Silence, quietude, time alone, naturally gives that. Then we can come back in to serve others in small ways. That we do. Then we take time for renewal. Jesus, the Budd...

That was a lovely post, Sandy. Because I served (unwillingly and resentfully) in the Air Force during the Viet Nam horror, I don't really do memorial day justice. Your post started changing my internal dialog away from the military aspects of the day.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Shape Of Silence — by Kent Nerburn
The silence is profound this morning. It is not portentous; there seems to be nothing in the waiting. It is a gentle silence, liquid and pastel, a shimmer on still waters. It is good to listen to the silence that surrounds each day. In the same way that music is made alive by the silence that surro...

Paying An Invisible Debt — by Millie America
Millie is an online friend of long standing. This little essay of her's really caught my attention. It begins... Mark Twain said, “Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe.” I am constantly reminded that worrying solves nothing. It's in moments that I let go that the magic begins to appear. Wor...
