There are a lot of mushrooms to choose from to grow, but I am going to try to keep it simple since this will be new to me.

If you get logs that are between 3-4 feet long and somewhere between half to 1 foot in diameter, you can inoculate the log with mushroom spores that you can order on wood dowels.

Once you inoculate the log, you leave it outside in a shady area and harvest mushrooms from the log for the next 3-12 years.

They have a lot of different kinds of mushrooms to choose from. Portabella mushrooms are grown in a growing medium, not on logs...

Morels grow wild and they can be found all over the place (If you know what you are looking for.) I have never tried these yet, but it's on my to-do list.

If you get into truffle farming, and you know what you are doing, you can retire after your first yield.
White truffles range between $1000.00 & $2000.00 per pound. They grow in Italy...
France is another country that exports the black truffle that is about $500.00 per pound. (The truffles grow on the roots of trees like Hazelnut.)

My only experience with truffles are the chocolate variety. But I can see myself as a Hazelnut farmer. ;) Are truffles difficult to grow or harvest? Is that why they are so expensive?... otherwise you would think we all would be truffle farmers. Of course then truffles would be a dime a dozen too.

I'll have to look into mushrooms here. See what we can grow in this country. Thanks for all the good information, Flint. :)

Truffles only grow in certain climates (I guess) and then you have to have hazelnut trees... and then it take between 3 to 5 years before you can dig them up and send them to market.

I just have been on a mushroom kick lately and am not sure why... It will be interesting to see what kind of mushrooms grow on your side of the world... (It always boggles my mind how fast information travels nowadays.)

It almost looks like bread... It does look good!

I am going to start adding mushrooms to my diet. I like the buttons, and Portabella, but now that I now how to grow them, that will bring me that much closer to being a vegetarian. (Not Vegan though.)

Are button mushrooms those common white ones that you find in most grocery stores? See how much or how little I know about mushrooms?
Now these you couldn't eat...but a couple years ago we saw a lovely patch of those large red with white spot kind of mushrooms or maybe they are actually toad stools that you often see in drawings with elves and fairies...It was almost magical! I just came across the photo yesterday that a friend of ours who was with us sent back.

I love cheese too much to be a vegan.
Love,
Sandy

I found them on google here are some pictures...aren’t they gorgeous! http://www.google.com.au/search?q=toads ... d=0CCUQsAQ

...but definitely toad stools.. better not even think of eating them!

Those red and white mushrooms are Russian psychedelic... They look nice though, but they are poisonous unless they are partially boiled. (I only know this because I looked it up on Wikipedia.)

...And yes, the buttons are the regular ones you find in the grocery store... sort of plain and boring, but they are very versatile.

... I am with you on the cheese.

The mushrooms I want to grow can be grown indoors or outdoors on logs or in a sawdust/straw medium.
Portabellas...
Shiitake
Blue Oyster
Pearl Oyster
Porcino
Hen of the Woods
Chicken of the Woods
and maybe a giant puff ball or Lion's mane... There are just so many to choose from.
Oh yeah, I want to grow some Morels too.
Most of these mushrooms would add a lot to my vegetable diet (I think.)

Most of the kits or log grown mushrooms produce 2-4lbs per year of mushrooms so this sounds like a great way to get some healthy treats. Some of the mushrooms are used in China for medicinal purposes... One is specifically used for tea, but I am not sure what it is supposed to do though.

As you can tell, I am excited about this.

I think you would just know after a while what you had... And if you end up with something you don't recognize, you leave it alone. (That would be my rule anyway.)

Hey Memaw...

I finally found this thread again.....I started reading at the beginning of course,,,,and today just skipped to the end, just so I could say.....here comes another oldie....me!

I love the mushroom conversation too,,,,

living on the west coast,,,,it's mushroom season.....I just noticed a bunch on the driveway,,,where we don't park...but I wouldn't try those, or the inkies that spring up....I've seen the oyster ones, but not adventurous enough to try them..

We have chantrelles here that are awesome,,,a nice nutty flavour...you can sautee them then freeze them...
excellent when there's none around.

we also have some 'dinner plates' can't remember the name, but they are huge and good.

but the best thing about them, is the walking in the woods,,,and the remuneration at the buyer stands....

love, pp

Oh I love walking in the woods, PP. :sunflower: I am going to start paying more attention to the ground next time...there is a whole world under our feet isn't there? After reading your post and rereading Flint's and all this talk of mushrooms is making me hungry for some. I just bought some buttons at the store. I am thinking I may make a raw mushroom soup for supper tonight. Yes, I said raw. It really is pretty good. I fixed it the first time while Beaver was visiting us a few years ago. For those of you recent to the board, Beaver is a dear friend of ours who pops up on the board every once in awhile. She is a raw foodist and when she came to australia, I joined her for the three months of her visit... (with a few exceptions of course. )

evenin Sandy,

yes the walk would be wonderful,,,hahaha...I can see me now,,,trying to push my walker thru the forest...or use two canes instead of one,,,hahahahaha,,,not likely, sistah! along the beach has been great though, I just don't try to run along the tops of the logs anymore..hahahahahahaha oh dear!

followup check up at the Dr's today, it was so gorgeous with the maples turning,,,,so many colours of gold yellow and orange, with the odd arbutus tree....

Memaw started this thread didn't she??? I'll have to tell her to get back over here....actually I talked to her this afternoon/evening for a bit. We're both champing at the bit to get down/over to New Mexico for the winter...

We've have two couples showing a great amount of interest in the house right now,,,sshhhhhhh :finger: can't jinx it...and I'm trying not to hold my breath...we should know something soon, and I'll let you know right away for sure.....

Hello PP,
You'd be amazed at the places a rolator will take you. I used to be amazed at Wingzie and the places she rolled when she was able. Of course she ran up against a few problems from time to time which took a bit of creative thought and manoeuvring and on the odd occasion her spirit was too weak and tired she got a little "special help." But I agree. Perhaps, the forest isn't the best place for you right now. ;) The beach sounds wonderful though! :sunflower:

Please tell Memaw we're thinking of her. I am hoping for the best for both of you "traveler wannabies." :finger:

dear sweet Wingzie,,,,it will be so nice to meet her in the when......

that was funny, as I have tried to take it outdoors to walk down to the lake,,,,I made it down to the level below the green house, and it was so hard to come back up, I said,,,that's it! so a cane it was, and I've done OK. The beach is really cool with a cane though...hope I do as well in the desert!

I think we're very close to a buy,,,,they have 3 little girls,,,and the girls are telling the parents,,,we'll take it! Should it be so easy, right....well,,,why not....the Mom said she has quite a few health issues, but when she was here she could feel the peace...

Oh dang, phone call.....oh not dang,,,,it's Laura....sending you a special hug and kisses.

gotta go, buddy on the phone...

:love from Laura. and :love me

I know this talk has moved to shrooms, but I too have recently returned. :hithere I've been reminded of 11:11 again and again lately. I think we don't so much "return" as we are somehow "called back". That's my thinking.

It's great to be among like minded friends! :sunflower:

Here's an interesting thing that happened to me today.
I slept in late and woke up around 11:00... I have been out to do stuff around the yard, and then I was online for a while... went out to eat... looked at antiques came home and realized that I wasn't wearing my contact lenses.

I functioned without my contact lenses for almost 6 hours with 20/20 vision.
It makes me wonder how I was seeing.

Just thought I would post this.

That is awesome Flint! :bana: Is it still 20/20 and are you wearing your contact lenses now? I read in a Louise Hay book once where she was speaking of one of her clients who experienced waking up to 20/20 vision, which was something she was focusing on achieving and it happened. Very Interesting!

Hey Waterlilly, our conversation do go "hither thither" sometimes, don't they? I am probably one of the worst culprets too for leading a thread off topics.  Yes, I agree we are sometimes brought together to do specific tasks... and it usually becomes clear as we each follow spirit. You may very well be correct in your assessment and the future task will become more apparent as we all work individually and collectively for our world. There is such great need all around us. :D

After I realized that I was not wearing my contact lenses, I went to put them in.
They are out again now.
Everything across the room is fuzzy... which, is weird because when I was looking around in the restaurant 10x the distance and everything was crystal clear. I went driving up the street and I didn't even know that I forgot to put them in.

Maybe a person can fix their eyesight though meditation, and positive affirmations, or reprogramming of self.

Louise seemed to think so. I honestly do think it is possible. I find it fascinating that this occurred without any active notice on your part. Did you think about your eyesight in any way before hand or complain about your eyesight being a problem? As an artist your eyes(inner and outer) are beyond value...so this is very good news! :D

:hithere Waterlily ,

nice to see you again also,,,,
I think we don't so much "return" as we are somehow "called back". That's my thinking.
, Laura and I often mull over that same thought, and then look at the changes/progression of our spirituality on the inbetween times. Kind of like, you get so far in your lessons, then have to put it in practice before the next jump...

Flint, I remember when I first started Reiki,,,,and I was reading alot, and on the computer toooo much,,,my eyes would burn. My Reiki teacher said to take a break, sit back and cover my eyes with my habds, and just breathe reiki into them....I was always amazed at how refreshed they felt afterwards,,,and not blurry...so I think what's happening fore you is excellent....Can you go to your eye Dr. and get it verified.....you might not have to wear them again....and I certainly wouldn't force it......

that's just great!!!

(10:10) I'm on a roll.

It was like I believed that my contacts were in my eyes... I somehow forgot to put them in and went about my daily routines without them in. When I went to check them because I thought is became slightly foggy or blurry like my contacts slid over, I realized that I had not had them in.

I think in some of my self programing I concentrate on healing things like my teeth and vision, but I do not do this all the time.
(I have a "I am grateful," session with myself, where I let the "Universe," know that I am grateful for... xyz in my life.) I sometimes ask or direct my body to do specific things... Sort of like an affirmation/program where I can wake up after a 20 minute to 2 hour power nap. I can wake up refreshed with lots of energy.

I am wondering if i am not experiencing some level of Alpha while I am alert and I am not just seeing though my physical eyes. (It's a weird thought, but something happened and it wasn't like my eyes healed... I just forgot that I bad vision for 6 hours.)

Eventually, I will go to get my eyes checked, but I have been doing okay without the eye Doc for a while, and right now I don't have a lot of time or money... (My round-robbin dilemma).

My attitude was a bit funky/off yesterday... and today, but I am a triple water sign so that moody stuff usually is part of the package deal. I have been getting into shape by gardening for a few weeks, so maybe my eyes are getting a work out too. Most of the time I can wake up and see things okay, and then things get better with my contacts, but I have only experienced the perfect vision after waking up and not really attempting to focus on anything. This was the first time I have ever experienced not wearing my contacts and seeing things crystal clear... It's one of those surprising moments.

I am not sure on the Alpha while being alert, but I have experienced what I would call a dream like state while I have been alert because of sleep deprivation.

I may have to meditate on it.

It just takes practise to be in an awake Alpha......George is in Alpha most of the time, and I know others who do also...I'm practising and can manage it sometimes...I find a slow regulated breathing pattern is most beneficial...
