Hey Eric,
Try not to fret about your meditation efforts. Sometimes focusing on what isn't happening makes it more prominent in our minds. We all, I suspect, can say we have had trouble quieting a busy mind from time to time. So no worries...

You could try a different kind of meditation, something like drawing mandalas, taking a walk and having a conversation with a celestial in your head...(even if it feels one sided) Just tell em what you think...
A little trick that has helped me is to take a half hour or so and just write every thought that comes into my mind (type) Don't think about the thoughts just record them as quickly as you can. After awhile it seems the floodgates have eased and it is easier to practice stillness/ meditation.
Wish I could do more for them than sit here hung over
Or wish I knew how to experience more.
Experience comes to you. We allow this to occur by making ourselves available in meditation on a regular basis which builds your spirit muscles and helps you to be ready for this experience that you crave.
It is like exercise. If you wish to run a marathon practice makes it easier. Set aside a little time 15 minutes for a start every single day. If you have trouble stilling your mind one day... no worries know that it may very well happen tomorrow or the day after etc. When you least expect it... BLAM!!!
POW!!! (thinking of old Batman show LOL

) you are blown away and awed by the experience.
hugs,
Sandy
