Hackers and Spammers

This board and some others are being subject to hacking. I don't yet know if this is an automated bot (and thus not a personal thing) or an individual.

The symptom is that when you arrive at the board you are told you have exceeded the number of log in attempts and must now log in with the added "benefit" of the captcha image. The captcha image at least makes it much harder for a bot, or tedious for a human, even us.

Please make sure you have a "hard" password. letters numbers, upper case, lower case and at least 8 long.

Do not reuse your log in name as the password, that's a easy hack.

It seems that folks who are able to automatically connect, by ticking that option, probably wont see these problems, or not until they bypass that option at some stage. Although this should not be the case, it seems the login process differs technically, and its the folks that are not signed in automatically that get the maximum number of tries exceeded warnings.

The hack in attempts have been traced to certain IP addresses, and seem to be a new way for spammers to get onto boards, as they have found that they can no longer bypass all the security. So its almost certainly an automated system.

Spammers are again turning up all too often. So we now have a requirement that you cannot save a web site address to your profile until you have 5 posts.

I am also probably going to implement something similar in respect of links.
