 Suddenly, it's clear that the right of free speech and the right of protest
are two different concepts now merged: each confers the right of the other.

 Apparently, this merging now creates a right of "free expression",
that activity/behavior required to properly express "speech" and "protest",
with reasonable collateral damage to property and persons permitted. :o

especially since "lockdown" will not likely be the preferred method of control (because the "at risk",
a substantial minority, will be the typical victims?). :(

"Students at the University of Washington want lax policies for black students during finals week."
"Professors are encouraged to give their black students grading leniency to 'cope emotionally.' "

:bana: Seems reasonable ... and provides good precedence for all students, individually or as a group,
for future episodes of emotional stress. Besides, whether the grade was earned or not will be confirmed
later during job employment or advanced schooling. The downside might be that graduates from UW
would have suspect records (assumed grade inflation).

"After dancing with and talking to a 'really hot girl' the 23-year-old pulled her over to the bar and offered to buy her a drink.
He placed his order for a beer, and, as he told the bartender, 'whatever she wants.'

The girl then promptly orders four double shots of expensive tequila — for reference, one shot of 1942 Don Julio is $75 —
explaining that she was buying extras for her friends."

"Those that advocate for such an approach seem to believe that most people are inherently good, and that if the police are removed from the equation that we could build a police-free utopia where we all learn to get along with one another just fine. But there is just one huge problem."

"Given the opportunity, there are a lot of people that will burn, loot, riot and harm others without even feeling bad about the pain that they are causing to others. By nature, humanity is deeply selfish, and it has not been easy to organize us into civilized societies. In order for a society to be governed by the rule of law, a relatively high level of morality is required"

See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police

 Many centuries of police forces (of various compositions) and have not yet proven that societies can live without authoritarian supervision. But the Minneapolis City Council plans are welcome ... if only as a modern attempt to see if the rule of law is still required.

Best guess: Authoritarian supervision will ultimately remain in Minneapolis but not be called "police force". And until lotsa jobs
and/or government assistance exists, the Minneapolis experiment might be best observed from other cities ...
since "Su casa es mi casa." may be the popular mantra in the new & improved Minneapolis. ;)

Re: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... tment.html

"No actual vote has taken place yet but the council members say they have enough votes - nine out of 13 - to overrule Mayor Frey ...
but that is not strictly true. By law, Minneapolis must maintain a police force of at least 723 police officers. It currently has some 800."

"To completely get rid of the department, the city charter would have to be amended - which would require a public vote
or the full approval of all 13 council members, including the mayor." ;)

Nevertheless, the protest by the 9 out of 13 makes great controversy for the media.

This modern symbolism seems reflective of a religion created centuries
after the greater one of faith performed his ceremonial washing ...
and is not symbolism easily borrowed for authoritarian gain.

"city council president says fear of having someone break into your home 'comes from a place of privilege' "

 In this large North Texas city, protective bars on windows and doors are usually non-existent in "places of privilege",
but often can be found in the poorer areas. Does this not suggest that fear is probably shared by all residents of the city
... or at least relative to higher crime areas (which are usually not places of "privilege")?

 And this perspective hints that defunding a police force
may impact higher crime areas more than "places of privilege". ;)

"Radcliffe lashes out at JK Rowling over her comments about transgender people and apologises to Harry Potter fans"

"Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people"

 On a symbolic level, this is intriguing disagreement between the fictional Harry Potter and his birth mother author
... suggesting that children are not limited by their parents' imperfections? Or maybe this is creative controversy
to light a new fire for more fiction, like Harry revealed as the transgender Harriet.

"Judge Napolitano explains ...
city charters require the cities to have police departments, so you can't just not have it."

 However, police departments are quickly responding to the problem:

Re: https://www.npr.org/sections/live-updat ... vent-abuse

"Dallas police must intervene whenever a fellow officer is using excessive force,
according to a new order from the city's police chief." 8)

 Probably a future source of discord amongst police officers (re: definition of "excessive force"),
but may be helped with perspective that a suspect's life should not be endangered by the force.
