Yeah I was watching those matches and they've every right to be annoyed at the refereeing! Everyone was baffled. I don't know where the ref was from but wow, some clangers made there!

Unfortunately as with a lot of sports, once a decision has been made in-game, there's very little an appeal can do.

I think it says the Russian Federation came in fourth with 24 golds, 25 silver and 33 bronze medals.
Wow, that's more bronze than anybody. :thumright: Well done London and all the atheletes who participated. You put on quite a show!

When do the Paralympics start? They should be coming up soon I should think.

Yeah Russia came 4th, not too clear there but oddly I couldn't find a better image. There were lots of jpegs for the end result but I wasn't certain they were for the very end of game standings or even for this years olympics.

The paralympics should start in a couple of days time, I'll post back once it's underway. I saw a clip on the tv the other day of a guy who had problems with his leg muscles and ankle issues of some sort, didn't quite catch what the name of his condition is, but he managed to throw his discus over 50m, amazing in comparison to able bodied men who maybe wouldn't reach 40m.

The Paralympics opening ceremony is today at 20:30 UK time, really looking forward to it as a part of my role working at Wakefield College is to help students with disabilities around the campus, getting from a to b with their classes etc. One student I support called Thomas has Cerebral Palsy which means his legs don't work quite right, told me that his brother who also has CP was playing for GB in the football (soccer), which if it is the case, will be really great! I haven't spoken to Thomas since early June, but if you spot a guy called Joshua in GB's team, could very well be ours from Wakefield.

Good luck to everyone taking part! We've had the warm up with the able bodied people, now is time for the main event! :)

Paralympics

Postby jack6251 » Mon Sep 03, 2012 11:15 am

Medal table so far in the 2012 Paralympics is:

Country………..Gold...Silver...Bronze.....Total
China…………....35…….24……..28..............87
Great Britain……16….…24….....14….….......54
Australia…………14…….11…....18…....…......43
Russia……….…..12……13…...….9….............34
Ukraine………….13…..…8…......12…….........33
United States.…...9….….8…..…16…...........33
Germany…….......5….….8…......8…..….......21
Spain……........….3…….8…...….7…............18
France……….…...4…….7…...….6….............17
Brazil………….....7…….3…...….3….…..........13
Netherlands….…..1….…3………9…….........…13

There's some controversy in the mens 200m with Oscar Pistorius complaining about the winners running blades being too long. It's quite an intricate debate over blade lengths, but there's a good article and video here at this link:

I haven't managed to catch as much as I'd hoped but by all accounts, it's been a great games so far for all nations :)

Well done to everyone taking part in the Paralympics, congrats to China who came first.

I've posted a link rather than the results as I'm having a little trouble with images and text for some reason, but the finish table is here:

Well done everyone, good luck to Brazil who're the next hosts! :)

Thanks Jack... the paras were amazing, the best, loved the part where that eritrean guy who was a mines victim i think so, was struggling to run around the track, he finished around ten minutes after everyone one else, running alone and got a standing ovation... i didnt get to see it all though.. i hope they continue to receive equal coverage at the games in the years to come..

Much love to all...

Hey Sarah,
I am ashamed to admit that I didn't even know there was such a thing as parolympics until I came to this country. That's how much coverage they were given where I come from....and that's a very sad commentary. In many ways I feel they are the most inspired games of all.
Love them! :thumright: (or erhmmm..."like them" very much! ;) :pig: )

Hi Sandy, yeah i think it started in the UK in the 1950's, some guy who was in a wheelchair wanted to do archery or shooting ? it was originally named after parapalegic (sp?) olympics, for people with spinal injuries but later other types of (dis) abilities came forward, such as people with bomb injuries.. so later they decided to call it para as meaning parrallel to the other olympics.. hey, yep a lot of people were saying that they were suprised too that its not big in the usa, yet was big in china..

I'm kinda glad someone from the US brought that up actually. Professionals and people involved in both the Olympics and Paralympics commented that the fact the US is so far down the league table in parlympic type tournements, shows the differing attitude in part that the US has towards people with disabilities compared to other nations...which is a real shame because with the right injection of cash & promotion from the US, hero's could be created to inspire everyone all over the world. But then again, they're all inspirational who enter the games to me.

I'd like one day for both types of games to be combined, rather than having one then the other. Would like to see a test Olympics one year at least where they try it.

Hi Sarah and Jack,
I too noticed the medal standings and wondered about the differences in attitude possibly contributing. True, though, there are many things that go into training and winning races...ability, stamina, desire, "stick toitiveness"... and of course a biggie as you mentioned support from others mentally and physically monetarily. I hope some day we all feel supported and loved regardless of what it is we choose to embark on in life. Now how we get to that point... will be a real test of human and celestial ingenuity.

How proud you guys must be that the parolymics actually find their beginning in Britain. Well done! Thanks for that little tid bit of history, Sarah! :sunflower:
