They use the fat to make various products and they eat it in some places. Though it really isn't good to eat as the mercury levels can be really high.

Hi Lola, My sister sent me that one a couple weeks ago... I said, No to Whale hunting!!!
A month or so ago George and I were watching a DVD called Blue Planet and in one segment they showed a Mommy whale and calf migrating it's way from the warm Carribbean waters to Alasaka. The film crew watched as a pod of killer whales zeroed in on them trying to get to the baby. The Mamma fought valiantly for 6 long hours before the monsters were able to come between the youngster and mom and it was soon over. I must have cried for an hour and will never look the same way at killer whales again... I know it is natures way but I couldn't have helped myself and would have had to help the whale victims. You can see I wouldn't make a very good naturalist and I suppose I am a bit hypocritical too as I didn't care a fig when the poor little plankton were getting eaten by the whales... Well, I've decided some of these nature videos are very hard to watch!

The Basque whalers of Europe hunted whales in Red Bay Labrador from the 1500's-1600's. The oil was
rendered out of the fat to be used mainly for lighting, lubrication and other uses such as cosmetics
and medicine. The baleen was prised for use in the ladies dresses and the meat cured and eaten .
In the hundred years they managed to kill 30-40,000 whales which do not migrate in that area any
more. The fat is not so important now but the meat is a delicacey in many countries still, mainly
asia I believe.
It's not just the whales that are disappearing though. It is estimated that 50% of all fish species are
now cut in half, probably more. With the world population about to double I don't have much hope
for anything swimming in the oceans around the world. The almighty dollar will always win over
any conservation efforts. :(

I may be over looking the obvious but I can't see any reason to expend the time, energy and funds to stop whaling instead of for example feeding starving people, funding animal shelters or any number of more productive ways to use the time etc.

It does look pretty obvious the anti whaling tactics of the people on the tv show Whale Wars are endangering the lives of the fathers, husbands, sons of the humans that crew the whaling ships.

Is there something special about whales like the Star Trek movie I don't know about? I don't mean to be critical here but every time I see the promo for Whale Wars it just looks wrong.

Sandy,
When I was a little girl I traumatized after I watched a documentary or dramatization (not sure) called Orca on Nova. The scene that will forever be etched in my mind is a mother whale strung up on deck after being harpooned. A baby orca / fetus fell out of the mother and bounced on the deck. I think her male mate hunted the whalers down for months afterwards. By all accounts they are brilliant - their comminucations and intelligence is thought to be still beyond our human comprehension and they have emotions and emotional ties to their mates, "families", "friends" and others. Dolphins are said to not like sharks and there are many many acounts of people who have been saved from shark attacks by dolphins forming a circle around the injured person, so the shark couldn't attack them any more, and helping them to safety.

I have also heard through 'Veronica' and entity / "spokesperson for a group of entities who communicate through deep trance channeller April Crawford, that whales & dolphins evolve spiritually much like humans. Elephants do as well but to a bit of a lesser degree. I haven't seen anything like that in the Urantia book or any of the channeled messages here yet though.

I guess we all have issues/missions that call to our spirits. My own sister's is clean and vibrant rivers and creeks. She gives much of her spare time in this effort working on several conservation boards, educating the public and writing letters to legislators to esure her voice is heard. We are all given individual abilities and unique personalities and it will take all of us doing whatever and where ever we are led to create a world we can all be proud of where suffering and abuse of any type will no longer be tolerated.

I signed it and passed it on. I know that some cultures continue to hunt whales, but to me there is a big difference between Inuit hunters and a mass whaling operation. I've had the pleasure of meeting gray whales in the wild. They are gentle giants.

Last weekend we went to a place called "Peanut Island". The kids and their friends were swimming in a lagoon. Along came 6 or 7 manatees. If you don't know what that is, google it because it's hard to explain. They were playing with the kids and delighting in their attention. I was in awe at how animals and humans are so connected.

Well, we have 65% of the genetics of a banana so my guess it the Manatees being a mammal would be pretty close.
Manatees is where the legend of the Mermaid began I believe, just like Narwhal was the fodder to start the legend of the Unicorn .
