Silver spoon?

Post by Amigoo » Fri Feb 14, 2020 3:43 am

Re: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29394

"we can envisage nano particles of silver being ‘brewed’ in many a home as an antibiotic or even as an illness preventative."

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_uses_of_silver

"Alternative medicine products such as colloidal silver are not safe or effective."

 Wikipedia (et al.) suggests that pure silver is beneficial for healing,
but not colloidal silver. Maybe the brewing technique is important. :?

Re: https://www.rxlist.com/colloidal_silver/supplements.htm

 This article mentions that dosage of colloidal silver is important
and that other medications may be affected by it.

More about silver ...

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_spoon

"silver utensils self-sanitize: silver has antimicrobial properties, due to the oligodynamic effect."

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligodynamic_effect

"Medical uses of silver"

"The metabolism of bacteria is adversely affected by silver ions at concentrations of 0.01–0.1 mg/L. Therefore, even less soluble silver compounds, such as silver chloride, also act as bactericides or germicides, but not the much less soluble silver sulfide. In the presence of atmospheric oxygen, metallic silver also has a bactericidal effect due to the formation of silver oxide, which is soluble enough to cause it. Bactericidal concentrations are reduced rapidly by adding colloidal silver, which has a high surface area. Even objects with a solid silver surface (e.g., table silver, silver coins, or silver foil) have a bactericidal effect. Silver drinking vessels were carried by military commanders on expeditions for protection against disease. It was once common to place silver foil or even silver coins on wounds for the same reason."

Silver sulfadiazine is used as an antiseptic ointment for extensive burns. An equilibrium dispersion of colloidal silver with dissolved silver ions can be used to purify drinking water at sea. Silver is incorporated into medical implants and devices such as catheters. Surfacine (silver iodide) is a relatively new antimicrobial for application to surfaces. Silver-impregnated wound dressings have proven especially useful against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Silver nitrate is used as a hemostatic, antiseptic and astringent. At one time, many states[clarification needed] required that the eyes of newborns be treated with a few drops of silver nitrate to guard against an infection of the eyes called gonorrheal neonatal ophthalmia, which the infants might have contracted as they passed through the birth canal. Silver ions are increasingly incorporated into many hard surfaces, such as plastics and steel, as a way to control microbial growth on items such as toilet seats, stethoscopes, and even refrigerator doors. Among the newer products being sold are plastic food containers infused with silver nanoparticles, which are intended to keep food fresher, and silver-infused athletic shirts and socks, which claim to minimize odors."

Apparent bottom line: Be informed and use with caution. ;)

Colloidal silver is interesting treatment for the coronavirus, but may be ineffective if treatment begins after infection starts (especially if the body's excessive immune response to the virus becomes the more serious problem). Colloidal silver has been a touted disease treatment - worldwide - for decades! Should we believe that infected Chinese (of many thousands) have not attempted to use colloidal silver to cure their infection?

The evidence to date - from many sources! - does not confirm the touted effectiveness of colloidal silver. But scientific evidence may exist some day for nanoparticles of silver leached from containers and utensils. Perhaps, the nanoparticles are effecive in killing a virus before it enters the body, but not so effective once the virus is spreading in the body.

:study: Re: https://dustyoldthing.com/fascinating-h ... er-spoons/

"Silver spoons were also helpful in avoiding poisons as they would tarnish on contact with sulfur, arsenic, and other compounds. This was no small comfort in a time before major food regulation when testing for poison wasn’t even always possible."

"Another benefit of sterling silver is the natural anti-microbial properties it possesses. They knew that silver could help kill some infections, so there was a general knowledge of the cleanliness of silver. Recent research shows that silver is so toxic to some bacteria cells that they can kill live specimens even after death. In the days before refrigeration a spoon of silver was much safer than one made of wood or bone."

 Note that this mentions "bacteria" - not "virus". ;)

wikipedia is not a reliable resource
 Actually, I have found Wikipedia to be a good source of information,
especially if it's not a researcher's only source. Case in point:

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_combining

"Though it is undisputed that diverse foods can be combined to make up for their respective limiting amino acids, a general consensus has emerged among nutrition scientist and writers contrary to the original vegetarian nutrition dogmas of the 1970s.

First, such foods do not need to be combined within a single meal.

Second, though historically protein combining was promoted as a method of compensating for supposed deficiencies in vegetables as foods, studies on essential amino acid contents in plant proteins have shown that vegetarians and vegans typically do not actually need to complement plant proteins in each meal to reach the desired level of essential amino acids as long as their diets are varied and caloric requirements are met."

This article confims Wikipedia's openness to editing correction/improvement:

Re: https://draxe.com/nutrition/colloidal-silver-benefits/

 This seems to be the best pro-colloidal silver information on the internet, however ...

"Colloidal silver needs to be applied differently for each condition. The most important factors to consider when using colloidal silver
is to purchase a high-quality, true colloidal silver product ... colloidal silver should not be taken for more than 14 days in a row ...
There isn’t enough research to determine whether or not it’s safe when taken for longer periods of time."

Quick analysis: If you have no other medical care options, colloidal silver is reasonable risk. :finger:

 Actually, silver therapy is effective ... for some medical purposes:

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_uses_of_silver

"Though toxicity of silver is low, the human body has no biological use for silver ... and when inhaled, ingested, injected, or applied topically,
silver will accumulate irreversibly in the body, particularly in the skin, and chronic use combined with exposure to sunlight can result
in a disfiguring condition known as argyria in which the skin becomes blue or blue-gray."

 Of course, this is a Wikipedia perspective

;) Wondering if accumulated colloidal silver would interfere with medical testing devices
(like MRI machines), I found this link: http://www.colloidforum.com/phpBB3/

 Not "scientific evidence", but worth considering :!:

Re: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articl ... es-it-work

"Silver can kill microorganisms by binding to their cells, without necessarily damaging human cells.
However, there is no evidence that colloidal silver has beneficial antimicrobial effects when ingested by mouth."

 Apparently, human cellls and microorganisms studied outside the body. ;)

Re: https://www.lymeneteurope.org/forum/vie ... php?t=3959

"In July 2011 came the turning point: collodial silver IM (oral had 0 effect) combined with lidocaine ...
to lessen the pain of the liquid which is quite painfull. I use it every 3 days (8ml) for 11 months now."

 Injecting colloidal silver was this person's self-therapy (for whatever disease).

This study was "scientific" and involved MRI testing ...
but volunteers were healthy (no medical condition requiring therapy):
https://thesilveredge.com/first-ever-co ... ety-study/

:o There's no point in continuing research - majority of any "evidence" will not be scientific ...
but accumulating anecdotes hint (hope?) that colloidal silver might yet be proven. :finger:

:study: Re: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324793

"there is no evidence that colloidal silver has beneficial antimicrobial effects when ingested by mouth."
"ingesting silver may have mild to severe health consequences"

 This article is a good summary of MANY internet articles about colloidal silver ... from many sources. To paraphrase, silver is known to be anti-microbial external to the body but of unproven value when ingested. Colloidal silver's low toxicity seems to explain why humans can consume its diluted form for long periods of time. ;)

However, silver does accumulate in tissues and organs - there seems to be a limit on how much silver should be consumed. Good evidence of over-consumption is when the skin turns blue - a cosmetic problem more than medical problem, apparently. Unfortunately, the skin will then remain blue regardless of attempts to correct this condition. :(

 Best guess: "Nano particles of silver ‘brewed’ in many a home as an antibiotic or even as an illness preventative" needs clarification since much scientific research to date is not so convincing! And even if "illness preventative" when ingested, daily/maximum dosage, purity, etc. needs explicit documentation. And which illness is being prevented (there are MANY) relative to a suggested dosage?

 Currently, a popular "little blue pill" only temporarily cures one condition
(So she claimed, giving me the sample. But it gave me a headache!).

One more attempt to create a reasonable summary of colloidal silver ...

:study: Re: https://www.silver-colloids.com/reports ... al-silver/

"Many companies sell colloidal silver generators and dozens of web sites provide information for experimenters and home hobbyists. All the machines sold for making colloidal silver use an electrolysis process and make ionic silver. There are no machines sold that are capable of making true colloidal silver."

"True silver colloids are products that do not contain any protein or other additives and whose silver content is predominantly in the form of nanometer-sized silver particles ... In true colloidal silver, the majority of the silver content is in the form of silver particles. True colloids will typically contain more than 50% particles (often 50 – 80%), while the balance (20% to 49%) will be silver ions. When referring to colloidal silver, the word colloid means silver particles. The two critical factors to look for in determining true colloids are the percentage of silver particles and the particle surface area."

"Upon ingestion, the ionic silver present in most colloidal silver solutions will immediately come into contact with the hydrochloric (HCl) acid that normally exists in the stomach to digest food. The chloride ion from the hydrochloric acid combines at once with the silver ion to form silver chloride, an insoluble silver compound. Since hydrochloric acid does not dissolve metallic silver, the silver particles remain unaffected by the stomach acid. Some of the remaining silver particles, due to their nanometer size will pass easily through the lining of the gastro-intestinal tract and will be absorbed into the bloodstream where they will circulate and come in contact with pathogens which will be killed on contact."

:bana: Discussion (IMO):

True colloidal silver kills pathogens (bacteria, etc.), but true colloidal silver must be purchased (cannot be made with simple equipment). However, any pathogen not killed by the available colloidal silver circulating in the blood stream (having been absorbed through the intestinal wall), can often reproduce to a level that existed before the colloidal silver was ingested.

Ultimately (IMO), one's immune system is responsible for the real and lasting health of the body. With the possibility that pathogens might remain after colloidal silver therapy (there are many types of pathogens with varying response to colloidal silver dosage and daily frequency) one's functional immune system is a neccessary backup to silver therapy.

:study: Here's a good discussion of the immune system: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/hig ... tem-review

Today's "reasonable summary": True colloidal silver is an expensive "medicine" that may or may not be sufficient for the illness requiring intervention (as perceived by the self-prescribing patient) . Since silver has low toxicity, typical ingestion is rarely problematic but there's a limit to how much silver the body can tolerate (some silver can accumulate in tissues and organs, depending on type ingested, whether or not attaching to bacteria (then killing bacteria and being eliminated by the body), etc.

Obviously  , man's creator intended that immune systems perform the role of disease prevention and recovery (colloidal silver as "medicine" did not exist until the 20th century). That which can be done to improve or heal one's immune system is the better focus for self-prescribed therapy.

Perthaps, an apple a day keeps Hi Ho Silver away (at least, confined to the wild marketing ranches). :finger:

Perhaps, an apple a day keeps Hi Ho Silver away
 New insight: That home-brewed silver is cheaper and creates less silver "medicine" may be fortuitous:
Less silver will be absorbed by the body and the self-prescribing patient might enjoy a placebo effect.

:study: More about silver, including "colloidal" ...
(this study notes an environmental concern)

Re: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6315945/

"We suggest that the application and commercialization of silver related products should be critically reassessed to avoid, or at least minimize, these adverse effects. In particular, while incorporation of silver products in an enclosed environment is justifiable, products which are expected to release silver into the environment should be avoided. There is ample evidence that there can be adverse long-term effects from consumption or exposure to silver, so silver products should only be used in circumstances where (1) there is an absolute need for it, such as a medical intervention, and (2) in modes where silver is immobilized and containable."

:study: More about good health to survive a coronavirus, flu, or bacteria threat ...

Re: https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/whi ... igeration/

[from Comments] "to maintain good gut flora, what you eat every day is more important than the probiotic you take.
Foods with fiber -- including inulin -- are best ... diet is the more important factor in our microbiome ...

The bacteria seem to follow the diet. In other words, even the worst eater will have a tiny amount of the good bacteria; if he/she shifts away from processed convenient foods laden with starch and sugar and moves toward consuming whole foods, in particular more vegetables with soluble fiber, the good bacteria will begin to thrive, multiply, and literally crowd out the bad bacteria, yeast, etc.

The 'bad bugs' eat junk, sugar and simple carbs, whereas the 'good bugs' eat vegetables rich in inulin/soluble fiber." 8)

 Feed the 'good bugs' not the 'bad bugs' to maintain a healthy microbiome (beneficial bacteria). Who can tell?! (probiotic researchers).
Probiotic supplements may be needed only when recovering from illness and/or weeks of prescribed antibiotics. ;)

Typical advice cautions to consult with your doctor, especially if taking medicines,
