The Exquisite Risk — by Mark Nepo

At any moment, if quiet enough and open enough, we can drop into the fabric of existence in which everything, even pain, has its vivid signature of energy that we call, at different times, truth or beauty or peace. It’s from this ground of being that we know and feel the unseeable web of connection...

The Sounds of Silence — ny Lisa Wells

WHEN I WAS a sixteen-year-old naturalist in training, we were instructed to sit in the forest and wait for the return of something called “the baseline symphony.” The baseline symphony was the music of a landscape at ease—the confluence of insect, bird, and animal song, underscored by wind and wate...

Agent Of Illumination — by Elizabeth Gilbert

Some years ago, I was stuck on a crosstown bus in New York City during rush hour. Traffic was barely moving. The bus was filled with cold, tired people who were deeply irritated with one another, with the world itself. Two men barked at each other about a shove that might or might not have been int...

Things to Look Forward To — by Maria Popova

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives,” Annie Dillard wrote in her timeless meditation on living with presence. “Lay hold of to-day’s task, and you will not need to depend so much upon to-morrow’s,” Seneca exhorted two millennia earlier as he offered the Stoic balance sheet f...

Weeding Baby Wendell — by Stuart M. Perkins

I've added links to a number of Stuart M. Perkins short stories in the past. They always leave me feeling a sort of comfortable nostalgia... remembrance of a feeling I wished I would have had. Here's another. The beginning of the piece is an announcement that "Weeding Baby Wendell" has ju...

Two Types Of Heartbreaks — by Parker Palmer

Suffering breaks our hearts — but there are two quite different ways for the heart to break. There’s the brittle heart that breaks apart into a thousand shards, a heart that takes us down as it explodes and is sometimes thrown like a grenade at the source of its pain. Then there’s the supple heart,...

When Science Is The Arbiter Of Metaphysics — by Paul Kalanithi

Although I had been raised in a devout Christian family, where prayer and Scripture readings were a nightly ritual, I, like most scientific types, came to believe in the possibility of a material conception of reality, an ultimately scientific worldview that would grant a complete metaphysics, minu...

Do What You Please, But I'm Watching — by Hubert Benoit

Alone, in a quiet place, muscularly relaxed (lying down or comfortably seated), I watch the emergence within myself of mental images, permitting my imagination to produce whatever it likes. It is as though I were saying to my image-making mind, 'Do what you please; but I am going to watch you doing...

Memnoon: Blessing The One Who Is Asked — by Heather Schlessman

One of the keys to a happier life is doing only what you want to do. We have been taught that is being selfish. That teaching comes from thousands of years of developing a domination over society. We have been taught to do things out of fear of punishment or desire for reward because that is how do...

Hi Eric,

No recovery is possible. It is simply the end of an era. I'm already in the throes of my new adventure. It ain't digital, though.

Just an FYI — from Welles

On March 11 all my websites went off line. Some vital files had been deleted. Although my hosting company had said several years ago that they were keeping backups of all the sites they hosted, my backup was 'unable to be accessed' what ever that means. Twelve years and six websites down the tubes....

Hi Sandy, I've had a few issues lately keeping me elsewhere but the whole thing of identity politics is fostered by those who would build contention into the world for their purposes that I would generally put in the evil category. Identity politics can't exist when people are creating and using th...

Between Gift And Privilege — by Jonathan Harris

I’ve been wondering: What makes something a gift? What is the difference between a gift and a privilege? What does it mean to be gifted? How can we help one another discover and develop our gifts? What would it mean to live in a gifted society? To understand the essence of gift, it may be helpful t...

Courage — by David Whyte

To be courageous is not necessarily to go anywhere or do anything except to make conscious those things we already feel deeply and then to live through the unending vulnerabilities of those consequences. Courage s a word that tempts us to think outwardly, to run bravely against opposing fire, to do...

This little article surprised and captivated my mind. This is an example of Anna's thinking that amazes me and is part of the reason I always read her little essays. I don't agree with all of them but am enlightened by many. With all this irresponsible talk about "reptilians" and "al...

I am a physician, neuroscientist, and anxiety expert. Many people I speak with have anxiety because they are trapped in their heads. I’d like to introduce a term here that I have not heard before (at least not in my field of medicine and psychology). I call it the “Cognitive Bypass.” I see a lot of...
